Today we're using the BMW case to take a long hard look at ourselves, something we perhaps should have done a long time ago.It has become almost standard practice for the media to tape popular sentiment when the verdict in a case like the BMW hit-and-run case is out.The public is ready with answers, but as we dig a little deeper, a more complex reality unfolds. In the nine years it has taken for Sanjeev Nanda to be convicted for running over and killing six people, he has been out on bail, successfully running his posh hotel in Delhi where often the same faces that form part of the public condemnation when faced with a camera can also switch sides in the evening and party with him."The page 3 circle float knows when to float with whom. This is a step in climbing the social ladder," said fashion designer Narendra Kumar."It is regressive because we believe we've been part of a moral victory. We see it as the triumph of good over evil, not realising that many times, we've been part of that evil. So the desire to be holier than thou is a normal human trait but you also want to be on the right side of the debate," said Suhel Seth. The most honest admission of the doublespeak that happens is what we came across on the street quite by accident. There is, however, a distinction that can be even in the middle class reaction to a case like the BMW, between people from the glitterati, the social elite, and the rest of the middle class, truly relieved to see that justice in this instance could not be subverted."I think there is a universal element to it. Everyone wants to know famous people but what is interesting here is that we look at famous people as if they were patrons. In politics we don't vote for someone who represents our point of view, we vote for someone we feel can do something for you. So in the Nanda case, it is there. In the chattering classes, the noisy people, they are the ones who are exulting, but if you see the other class many are not happy because they feel if it could happen to him it could happen to us," said Dipankar Gupta, a sociologist.

International Industrial Trade Show

ArriveNEWS, a division of the Industrial Leaders Group (ILG) and organizer of the International Industrial Trade Show (http://www.ArriveNEWS.com/iits.html), announced today the addition of 87 exhibitors for IITS 2008. Foreclosures climb to new record levels, and homeowners caught in this crisis pay a higher cost than just the financial losses of foreclosure. The personal and emotional costs are also mounting. They are worried, confused, frustrated and often embarrassed and afraid to talk with their lender about ways to help solve their problems. Organizations are springing up everywhere to assist distressed homeowners deal with their financial and emotional situation. Some offer counseling services or mediation with lending institutions. Some offer buyout options to homeowners who are about to lose their homes to foreclosure.
Tina, a single mother of two, living in Moreno Valley, California, thought buying a house was going to be the happiest time of her life. "I was living 'the American dream' until one day my son was diagnosed with a life threatening illness. My dream after time became my nightmare. I started missing days at work that lead to missed income. It was nearly impossible to make my mortgage payment."
Larry Howell co-founder of the Mortgage Default Legal Team, a new enterprise that assists homeowners through the foreclosure process, said, "We saw a need that we knew we could fill. We had a group of legal, mortgage, and real estate professionals that have more than 100 years combined experience. We negotiate with lenders, stop harassment and collection calls, assist in relocation and credit repair and council our clients about their rights. Howell said that although many foreclosure stories are about family hardship, there is also an increasing number of homeowners who are upside-down in their mortgages; that is the value of their home is significantly less than their mortgage. They recognize that the investment in their home has gone bad, and they are looking for help and advice.

145 die in Hindu Naina Devi temple stampede
A religious pilgrimage turned into a disaster when at least 145 people – most of them women and children – were killed as a crowd of thousands stampeded at a Hindu shrine in northern India।Police said that a crowd of up to 10,000 pilgrims may have panicked yesterday morning after heavy rains caused loose stones to tumble down a hillside as they made their way up a narrow two-and-a-half mile path to a hill-top temple in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh.

    Asian
The demonym "Asian" is often used colloquially to refer to people from a subregion of Asia instead of for anyone from Asia. on Monday sang a different tune calling Bachchan a "superstar of the entire country". "Amitabh is not just star of one particular state, but the superstar of the whole country. Hence it is improper to drag him into needless controversy of regionalism," Thackeray said in an editorial on Monday. The Sena chief asked not to drag the actors into the ‘son of the soil’ controversy. In a front page article two days back, Saamna had praised Tamil superstar Rajnikanth, who had his early life in Karnataka, for his stand on the Hogenakkal issue and said it had "dwarfed" Bachchan when it came to taking a firm position on issues relating to Maharashtra. Rajnikanth had joined protests by the Tamil film industry against Karnataka over the water issue, despite bring brought up in Karnataka and born in Maharashtra.

Mahendrs Singh Tikait

Wednesday, April 02, isauli (UP), April 2: BKU leader Mahendra Singh Tikait was arrested on Wednesday after he surrendered before the police for his alleged casteist remarks against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati ending three days of tension. But Yousaf Raza Gilani also has a personal reason to ignore Musharraf's appeals for cooperation: he spent years in jail under the beleaguered U.S.-backed leader. Lawmakers choose Pakistan's next prime minister in a vote in parliament on Monday. A pro-Musharraf party has nominated a die-hard supporter of the former army strongman. It causes the creative juices to flow and the eyes to light up. But wait - before you begin the publishing process, know about the seven most important steps you need to know before publishing your book. Make sure that you take every step into careful consideration so that your road to success is an easy one: Know why you are writing a book. Are you writing your memoirs for the family, are you writing a community cookbook, are you writing a book of regional interest or are you writing a national bestseller? All of these goals are valid, but each goal has different implications for your business plan. Know why you are writing and know that you can create that bestseller if that is your goal. Treat publishing as a business. You are passing beyond the realm of author into the exciting world of publishing. You are not just a writer, you are about to become a publisher who wants to produce a profitable book, and you want to keep the profits for yourself. Write a business plan. Being aware of the business aspect of publishing is not an end in itself - you need to formally write your plan. It does not need to be a fifty page document with every accounting possibility recorded, but it should outline all of the costs that you will encounter from obtaining the necessary funds to knowing the price of mailing a book. The business plan needs to account for future expenses as well as pre-publication expenses Plan for publicity and marketing. You must plan for the publicity and marketing of your book. You can have the best book in the world, but if no one knows about it, no one will buy it. You don't want to print books that sit in your garage. You want to print books that will sell, sell, sell! Write about a subject that you know well. Don't write about something that you can't talk about without effort. Write about a subject with which you are very familiar and that excites you. Writing the book will establish you as an expert in your field, so choose the topic that causes everyone you know to come to you for advice. The publicity will then be so easy that you will love being the "star" Know who will buy your book. So many authors think that "everyone" needs and should buy their books. Not so. Perhaps "everyone" needs their books, but not "everyone" will want to buy. Research and know WHO will actually WANT your book and market, market to them. They will buy! Look for non-bookstore markets and do not be afraid of the large discounts. Bookstores are a hugely important market for most authors, but they are far from being the only place to sell books. There are many non-traditional markets that buy books in large quantities with no returns. This is a great market - sales made are guaranteed sales not consignment sales. Do not be afraid of the larger discounts when you make those large volume sales. The books you sell are actually SOLD. Obama told the former first lady he was helping unemployed workers on the streets of Chicago when "you were a corporate lawyer sitting on the board at Wal-Mart." Moments later, Clinton said that she was fighting against misguided Republican policies "when you were practicing law and representing your contributor ... in his slum landlord business in inner city Chicago." Obama seemed particularly irritated at the former president, whom he accused in absentia of uttering a series of distortions to aid his wife's presidential effort. "I'm here. He's not," she snapped. "Well, I can't tell who I'm running against sometimes," Obama countered.

The two rivals, joined by former Sen. Meanwhile Nielsen//NetRatings, an Internet media and market research company, reported that more than 59 million people visited newspapers’ websites during the first quarter of 2007 (37.6 percent of all active Internet users).

This represents a 5.3 percent increase over the same period a year earlier. Scarborough Research, a firm that researches media habits, reports that, on average, newspapers’ websites contribute to a 13.7 percent increase in newspaper audience for 25- to 34-year-olds, and a 9.2 percent increase for 18- to 24-year-old But, it is newspapers’ weblogs (blogs) that have enjoyed the largest increase in readership.

According to Nielsen/NetRatings, visits to the blogs of the top ten newspapers grew by 210% from December 2005 – December 2006, garnering 3.8 million unique visitors in December 2006. By contrast, total online readership at the top ten newspapers grew only 9% over the same period. While one interpretation of these statistics could potentially fuel the debate over whether the newspaper is “dying,” what is more accurate and interesting to note is that the newspaper organization is changing – and changing dramatically. These statistics indicate that while readership of the print edition of newspapers is decreasing, newspaper organizations are successfully retaining their audience, and in some cases growing audience, particularly in the younger demographics by complementing their print offerings with an online component, especially online offerings like blogs where readers can not only read the news, but participate in the journalistic process by commenting and engaging in conversation and debate about the news and in some cases even contributing content in the form of photos and commentary, a practice called citizen journalism.

Summary of 19th Century of Newsparers

As a new American nation emerged in the 1800s, the first draft of history was written by those who experienced it and recorded it in newspaper pages from coast to coast. Reading those exact pages is like stepping directly into history. And with Gale’s 19th Century U.S. Newspapers — a full-text searchable, facsimile-image database-experiencing 19th-century American culture, daily life and events is as easy as clicking a mouse.

This close look provides a unique perspective valuable to both professional and general researchers across a spectrum of subjects. Newspapers were the lifeblood of the new Republic, and the contents of their pages helped shape the nation’s identity, carrying not just the stories which unified American opinions, norms and interests, but fueling the crucial debates of the day. The 19th century press helped to create an environment of free expression which came to typify both America and the American. Here, merchants would distribute newsletters written by hand containing information regarding the weather, economic conditions, wars and human-interest stories. Although this was the first known form of distributed written information, the country accredited with the creation of the first newspaper is Germany. In the late fifteenth century, a cross between a brochure and a pamphlet was dispersed among the people, the text containing highly sensationalized stories along with description of the current news events.
America, however, was a step behind. Publick Occurrences, Both Foreign and Domestick, was the first newspaper published in America. Printed by Richard Pierce, and edited by Benjamin Harris, the first copy issued on September 25, 1690 would also be the last. It filled only 3 sheets of paper measuring six by ten inches, the equivalent of filling half of the front page of a newspaper today (14" x 23"). The paper had intended to be issued once a month.
The sudden discontinuation of Publick Occurrences would mean the last news offered to Americans for the next few years. Instead, newspapers published in London were read even though the "first true newspaper in English was the London Gazette, published four years later in 1666.
Fourteen years later, back in America, John Campbell, a bookseller appointed Postmaster of Boston, became the editor of the Boston News-Letter. The first issue was dated Monday, April 17 to Monday April 24, 1704 and contained only one advertisement. This was produced weekly and continued to be so even when William Brooker was appointed Postmaster to replace Campbell. Campbell refused to authorize the use of the title "News-Letter" to anyone else so Brooker called his newspaper the "Boston Gazette". Seven months later, Philip Musgrave was awarded the position of Postmaster in Boston and replaced Brooker. At this time, James Franklin, the printer of the Gazette, was also replaced. He wanted to start his own newspaper even though friends and family dissuaded him from doing so by telling him that Boston already had a sufficient number of newspapers (2) and a third could not survive. Despite this, Franklin went ahead and published his own newspaper, the New England Courant. The first issue was printed on August 19, 1721 making it the fourth newspaper published in America.
When James Franklin published an editorial criticizing the government, he was sent to prison. James' 13 year old brother and apprentice, Ben, took over the work of laying type, printing, and delivery of the issues. Six months later, James Franklin was forbidden to publish any more newspapers so the masthead now carried the name "Ben Franklin" as editor and publisher. Ben, now legally free of being an apprentice, and having a dislike for his brother James, ran away to New York and later to Philadelphia. The New England Courant kept publishing issues claiming Ben Franklin was editor and publisher until 1726 without anyone being the wiser.
The fact that newspapers had been so scarce in Europe, America, and many other continents is due to many factors. To find a literate man was no easy task after Europe was emerging from the black age. Paper was extremely expensive, and hard to come across, and the task of printing was long and laborious. The latter was still a problem even with the invention of the printing press in 1436.
A 39-year-old Johann Gutenberg came up with a printing method, where, by arranging stamps displaying the letters of the alphabet, one could construct a page of literature to be copied numerous times. This became known as the Gutenberg Press, one of the greater inventions the fifteenth century held. Although a giant improvement from hand copying, this method still required the rearrangement of the letters each time a new page was to be printed.
In the early 1800's the development of continuous rolls of paper enhanced the original Gutenberg Press as did a steam-powered press and a way to use iron instead of wood for building presses. This added efficiency of printing made the prices of printed goods more reasonable hence the term "penny press". This phrase originated when newspaperman Benjamin Day dropped the price of his New York Sun to a penny a copy in 1833. Historians have accredited the "penny press" as the first true mass medium.
Another advancement in the history of printing was the origin of Linotype, a method of creating movable type by machine instead of by hand. This was introduced in 1884 and marked a significant leap in production speed. In terms of the use of computers in the field of printing, especially newspapers, the progression is unbelievable. From the first daisy-wheel and dot matrix "impact" printers to common use of the non-impact printers: ink-jet, laser and thermal-transfer, printing presses are on the brink of becoming a thing of the past.
The big question regarding what the future holds for the old-fashioned newspaper is whether or not it will be overcome by the use of the Internet. Studies show that from 1992 to 1997, the weekly hours of using the Internet has increased from 1.8 hours, to 9.1. Although the evidence is convincing that in the future the use of computers will obliterate that of newspapers, sometimes the tangible aspect is too great to give up for a color monitor. You may be convinced that there's no better way to relax than with some black coffee and the front page. Or perhaps up-to-the-minute updates on top stories are more your interest.
